Achievement & Awards
(Student Recognition)

MRSS Button SUPER ‘G’
After each formal reporting period, those students who attain 7 or more ‘G’s (6 for grade 12 students) for their work habits and no ‘N’s will receive a ‘Super G’ work ethic recognition.

HONOUR ROLL

The requirements for Honour Roll are a ‘B’ average in 7 courses for junior grades, or 6 courses at the senior level (gr. 11 & 12), and no failing or 'I' grades. Students who achieve Honour Roll in the first reporting term will receive a certificate for first term Honour Roll. Students meeting the requirement at the end of second term will receive a certificate and pin at the school awards ceremony in May.

TOP HAT
Students in grades 8-10 who earn 7 or more A’s in a term or students at the senior level (gr. 11 & 12) who earn 6 or more A’s in a term, will receive a Top Hat recognition certificate. Students who earn Top Hat status will also be recognized at the awards ceremony. Grade 11 students must be within 10 marks of the expected progress level in Graduation Transition 11 to maintain Honour Roll status. A failing mark or an ‘I’ in any course will exclude a student from receiving Top Hat.

AWARDS SYSTEM
Kinds of Awards:
1.     Certificates and pins for honours, service and athletics.
2.     Trophies for honours, service and athletics as well as athletic blocks.

Honour Roll pins are awarded based on students meeting the Honour Roll requirements at the end of the second cumulative reporting period.
1st year recognition - Red Pin
2nd year recognition -  Green Pin
3rd year recognition -  Blue Pin
4th  year recognition - Silver Pin
5th year recognition -  Gold Pin

Athletic Awards are cumulative over the five years in high school and are only awarded once. Coaches assign athletes points based on their commitment, enthusiasm, team play, and their value to the team as a whole. Major sports carry a maximum weighting of 70 points and minor sports have a maximum weighting of 35 points. A major sport has a season that is greater than three months, a minor sport has a season that is less that three months. When a student achieves a score greater than those listed below they receive the following awards:
100 points – certificate of participation
200 points – small block
400 points – large block
600 points – bronze plaque
800 points – silver plaque
1000 points – gold plaque

Purpose Of The Awards:
The system of school awards is designed to encourage in as many students as possible, the habits of excellence in studies, participation in sports, and service to the school and community.  While none of the certificates, blocks or pins are easy to win, winning one is within the reach of any student willing to make the effort.

PASSPORT TO EDUCATION
Students are eligible to receive passport stamps in Grades 10, 11, and 12 which can be used towards their education.  Each stamp is for a specific dollar value.

Parents and students often confuse Passport to Education with Honour Roll.  Obtaining Honour Roll does not always translate to receiving Passport stamps.
To benefit from their accumulated stamps, students must enroll in and attend a program at a post secondary institution which is approved for Canada Student Loans by the Ministry of Skills, Training and Labour.  For more information, contact our school counsellors.
